Asthma Attack. No Inhaler. What Do I Do?

\"Asthma

Hey!!! welcome to the part B in the asthma series. We have talked about asthma attack, signs and how to manage it. If you have not read, follow this link and you will catch up.

So, life happens and you are not with your inhaler when there is an asthma attack or you are with it only to find out that it has been exhausted. If you or a family member or a friend or even a stranger is in this situation, what is to be done? For one, it is not a time to panic as there are ways to stabilize an asthmatic attack before the big health comes

0NE. SIT UPRIGHT

Do not be tempted to lie down so as to calm yourself during a no-inhaler asthmatic attack situation. It can only make it worse. Sitting upright can help keep the airways open.

TWO. BE CALM

Panic and anxiety can only make the asthma attack worse than it already is. So, while waiting to get help and for symptoms to subside, try to keep be steady and make the person you are trying to help to relax. You could put on the TV or a play a calm song to help keep yourself or the person calm.

THREE. BREATHE STEADILY

Try to take slow steady breaths during the asthma attack. Slow steady breaths can help to reduce the symptoms of the attack. Breathe slowly through your nose as opposed to through your mouth can also help you.

FOUR. AVOID TRIGGERS

Triggers as the name already suggests are things that cause asthmatic attacks or make the symptoms worse. If you have lived with asthma, by now, you should know the triggers. Common triggers include:

  • allergens, such as pet dander, pollen, or certain foods
  • exercise
  • irritants, such as tobacco smoke or pollution
  • stress or anxiety
  • some medications, such as aspirin, ibuprofen, or beta-blockers
  • respiratory infections, such as the common cold, the flu, or mycoplasma
  • breathing in cold, dry air

if you are around any of these triggers, quickly move away from them as they can make the symptoms worse.

FIVE. DRINK HOT, CAFFEINATED BEVERAGE

Hot coffee or tea can be helpful in easing some of the symptoms if you or a loved one is suffering from an asthma attack without an inhaler. If you are able to, try sipping some to slightly open your airways and get some relief. Asthmatics however, should not consume large amounts of caffeine on a regular basis; save this trick for if and when you truly need it!

SIX. FINALLY. SEEK PROPER MEDICAL HELP

It is better to be safe than sorry. If you cannot speak or are having trouble walking during an asthma attack it is a sure sign that you need attention right away. As soon as you can, have a doctor check you and get you on a treatment plan that will be suitable for you.
